Governance

Responsible decisions begin with clear principles.

At EVMSI, strong governance is a core priority. Transparency, accountability and ethical standards should guide our work. As EVMSI develops, decisions about research, potential partnerships and possible future investments should be guided by clear responsibilities, evidence and an understanding of potential risks. The aim is to assess both the practical value of an opportunity and the people who may be affected by it.

Decision principles

01

Responsibilities should be clear.

As EVMSI develops, decisions should have a clear purpose and identifiable responsibilities. The people considering an opportunity should understand what they are being asked to assess.

02

Potential conflicts deserve attention.

Personal or commercial interests can affect a judgement. Potential conflicts should be recognised and considered before decisions about research, collaboration or future investment are made.

03

Evidence should support conclusions.

An assessment should explain the information behind it, the assumptions it relies on and what remains uncertain. A persuasive presentation alone should not determine a decision.

04

Risks should be considered early.

Practical, financial, ethical and information risks should be examined alongside potential benefits. The assessment should consider who might be affected and what responsibilities could arise.

05

Commitments require careful evaluation.

A possible partnership or future investment should be assessed on its own merits. Interest in a field does not remove the need to examine a specific opportunity and its requirements.

06

Judgements should remain open to review.

New evidence can change an assessment. Our aim is to revisit assumptions, explain changes in understanding and learn from questions raised by others.

What we publish.

This website shares our areas of interest and the questions that guide our research. Discussion of a technology or opportunity does not imply that EVMSI owns, finances or operates it.

References to possible partnerships or future investment describe intentions that would require further evaluation. We aim to make the distinction between research, aspiration and a confirmed activity clear.
